Left Hand Cam - Reading Timing Marks.

The green/yellow earth wire is there to prevent the chain from dropping into the void. It will stay there until everything is secured.

Left Hand Exhaust mark.

This is in the correct position. Note the index line is parallel with the crank case top (well almost, there's a bit of slack in the chain at the top). The line of sight is too high - note how much of the top surface of the casing you can see.

Nothing has moved. Same camshaft taken from lower down, but still too high,

Nothing has moved. Same camshaft. Photo taken from everso slightly above the line of the surface of the casing. Note the bit of slack in the cam chain top. When this is removed, the mark aligns perfectly with the crank case top.

One tooth out.

It is interesting to compare this shot with the first shot. The first one is correct. This one is wrong. But the mark seems to be in a similar position. We are looking from above so we expect to see the gap between the mark and the casing. But the mark isn't parallel with the casing top. Note also that the cam chain is tight at the top. The cam needs rotating one tooth clockwise to be correct.

Issues.

Make sure that the cam chain is correctly routed - use a torch, make sure it doesnt take a detour around the protruding shaft. Make sure that there is no 'loop' of chain around the bottom of the sprocket (You can't see this, but you will know if there is not enough chain to install the 2nd cam). If anything is not correct, put it right, then go back to chaeck the installation of the first cam. Just cos it was right, doesn't mean it will stay right if any of the above are wrong.

Tips

Look at the photos for the right hand cam - using a torch to cast a shadow, and using a mirror to get the correct sight line for the inlet cams.

Check the timing mark is spot on. A little error there, a bit of slack in the chain can result in an incorrect reading.

Check that all of the slack from the bottom of the chain is taken up before seating the first cam.
